Join us and hear from three inspiring conservation leaders:

1. Barbara Zimmerman – Kayapo Project Director (Brazil): Barbara Zimmerman is a tropical ecologist who has conducted field research in the Brazilian Amazon since her graduate studies (MSc, University of Guelph; PhD, Florida State University). Since 1989, she has worked with the Kayapo of Brazil’s Xingu Basin to develop conservation-based economic alternatives to logging and to strengthen Kayapo capacity for territorial control. Today, the Kayapo protect 100,000 km² of legally ratified territories. Barbara collaborates closely with ICFC’s Kayapo NGO partners, Brazilian NGOs and government agencies, and, most importantly, the Kayapo people themselves.

2. Dominique Bikaba – Congo Basin (DR Congo): Dominique is the Executive Director and a founding member of Strong Roots Congo, an NGO dedicated to conservation and sustainable development in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For over 20 years, he has led initiatives that balance human well-being with the protection of forests and wildlife, with a focus on integrating the knowledge of local and Indigenous communities into conservation practices. His expertise is sought nationally and internationally, both as a consultant and as an author of publications on community-based conservation, great ape preservation, and natural resource governance.
3. Malcolm Kobak – Southeast Asia (Indonesia): Papua-born conservation pioneer Malcolm Kobak co-founded YAPPENDA in 2022 to protect the region’s biodiversity and Indigenous heritage. Raised among the Yali people, he brings deep cultural knowledge alongside 25 years of service in Canadian law enforcement with Peel Regional Police, Durham Regional Police, and the RCMP. In 2020, Malcolm received the Police Exemplary Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.
